One more from Oak Island…

November 19th, 2016

Taken by the drone…the man is the mayor (if I remember correctly) of Oak Island, helping to repair the lighthouse after Hurricane Matthew.

A 511th Tactical Fighter Squadron A-10 rolls out of the chocks for a mission from Base aérienne 126 in east Corsica, May 1987. In the background is the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Wildfires in the West…

November 9th, 2016

The Mountains of Western NC were on fire this fall from the lack of rainfall. Normally the fall is usually pretty good for having some raining days…but not this year. It just stayed dry for most of the early autumn, and if it hadn’t been for the hurricane in October, we would have went longer. Here is a photo from the wildfires on South Mountain State Park.

Last Light….

October 26th, 2016

Recent visit to Oak Island, and did some aerial photography of the lighthouse at dusk. Turned out great, and I always enjoy the great tunes that Kevin spins out at This one fit the mood perfectly. As well, you can see some of the latest photos I have posted here.

June 18th, 2016

I’ve been doing a lot of videography lately, and a lot of drone work. Here is a fun example of both, using the drone to film combines harvesting wheat ahead of an approaching storm. The clouds caused it to get dark early, but the camera on my drone did a pretty good job of keeping the details.

The Powhatan Arrow

May 22nd, 2016

After the trip through the Carolinas, the N&W #611 ran some of the old routes that it had back in the day. One was the original route for the Powhatan Arrow, the other was an original route for the Pelican. Here is video footage from those trips.

Norfolk & Western #611 heads for the mountains…

April 14th, 2016

The N&W #611 took a excursion trip to Asheville, NC from Spencer, NC. The weather was excellent…very chilly starting out, which makes for some great smoke from the locomotive, but sunny and clear most of the day. Unfortunately, a front came in over the mountains for the return, but the footage was still great!

Another from Indian Creek…

March 21st, 2016

I made another trip to the Indian Creek trestle near Crouse, NC, and caught another freight heading south into Charlotte at dusk. Again, these are all images you can’t get from the ground…way too much brush.

Reconnaissance photo…

March 17th, 2016

After being sick and then a lot of bad weather, finally got to get my drone out for some test flights. I’ve always liked this trestle over Indian Creek near Crouse, NC, but it is not good at all for a ground shot, too much brush. However, it’s picture perfect for an aerial shot…or video.

Updates to Transportation galleries…

March 17th, 2016

Spent quite a bit of time scanning in new stuff for my collection on the transportation galleries. One really interesting photo was this of a northbound train from St. Louis in 1911 in Elsberry, Mo. 100 years has passed since this train left the station. Quite a bit of new stuff here! Over 20 pages of new photos in the railroad collection (number at lower right of the page). And more on the way! Still have probably another 200 photos & slides to scan.
